This was not an easy book to read. It originated as a Thesis paper and is very academic in nature. The author did a tremendous amount of research and the only reason I gave it a four instead of five because sometimes I felt that I was reading the same information over and over again. This book is actual facts and not embellished stories. I have to say this book in many ways is an eye opener. Many events at that time period I was not aware of. A number of times I got angry and disgusted by the way Politician, Judges and Law Enforcement empowered the rich and sided with the mine owners. Degrading the woman fighting for better life conditions by labeling them as communist or racial motivated. Harassment of the woman and families that included getting arrested on drummed up charges. The woman portrayed in this book where amazing that became heavily invested out of necessity for themselves and their community. I highly recommend this book anybody that wants to learn the facts.

This book is more academic in nature and seems to be very much like a dissertation. I must honestly say I only skimmed a lot of the political detail but it seems the author did a lot of research into this project.The most interesting part of the book was the stories of the strong women who sought change and helped their people in Appalach. I would have preferred to read more biography of them rather than the political manutia. (Especially the Easterling women) I gave 4 stars because the author did apparently work hard on the political details and politicians involved, but they were uninteresting to me. I was aware that mountain people had a hard life, but I had no idea of the reality. I was impressed with the women who rose up and battled the establishment for their families.**This book would make a great study for a political science class or Southern or Appalachian history class.!!!!Not a book for the casual reader.!!!Thank you to the author, NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC for an honest opinion. This book was obviously well researched with the author impressing her research on the reader. The author had an agenda to proclaim and made her case over and over again. I’m guessing that this was written in response to some sort of “publish or perish” dictum.I received this Kindle edition as an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, University of Illinois Press, in exchange for an honest review.

I have not read the whole book, but Jessica Wilkerson’s new book excites me as I read bits and pieces. I am so excited about this book, I can hardly stand to start reading it in whole. I don’t have a hard copy, but thank goodness for Kindle. Jessica appears to have written the book I didn’t have the education and temperament to write myself. Her brilliance is another element that fails me. I am sure I will not agree with all she writes, but I haven’t found it yet. How wonderful to know someone who understands what i have been trying to tell all these years and so much more. For once, I have nothing further to say. Gibbs Kinderman called me a contrarian. Finally things that locals do and say is not intrinsically less important or less valuable than the outsider who came to do good, even with all good intention. Remember I married two of them. So my relationship with those that came to do good is complex. I will be very happy to see the response to her book in the coming year. Thank you Jessica for all your hard work. Avery well written and well researched book on the struggles that women have always had to deal with in the south. It was very compelling to know that someone else agrees with what I always thought of the women in my past, that they are strong, independant, and the main stay of their families. I have already recommended this book to many in my family.
