It's an engrossing story of Liberia using the subordinate story of Pres. Charles Taylor's son, in my opinion,as a hook to sell the book. The recent history of Liberia is depressing, but essential reading. This telling their story is tightly written and well, seemingly, accurately stated. Recent events in Liberia indicate that this basket case of a nation is no closer to true independence than it was under Taylor and his brutal son.Before you contribute one penny in charitable aid or shed one more tear for Liberia, please read this book.
I was in Monrovia from March 1998-Dec 1999. I was engaged in the business sector and some aspects of civil society through private enterprise humanitarian initiatives to facilitate coming out of war. I knew and met face to face with Charles Taylor. I only knew about Chucky _ never saw him. Chucky's story horrified me and deeply saddened me. We must accept and act on the problematic of being a Father. Fathers' Day is coming again in its commercial way.The book filled my info gaps, but underlined the consequences of fathers too long absent and sons nonetheless seeking to gain fatherly love and direction. Charles failed Chucky.Good story that goes beyond the Liberia story, if you care.
This is one of the few historical/bio books I've read nonstop. I have firsthand account of many of the stories the author wrote about, and his explanation and descriptions are historically detailed and very accurate. I felt as if I was reliving a past. Thanks, Mr. Dwyer.
Superb and well researched. I like that the author does not attempt to fictionalize or speculate wildly where he lacks material, but presents his material as is. And this extraordinary story of an inner city American youth thrust into a role as a Liberian warlord thanks to his extraordinary lineage is quite fantastical on its own without any need for sensationalization. I really enjoyed this.
A very engaging book. Should be a text book for Poly Sci Majors. Good for a mature High School History Class. I enjoyed the book, very detailed and you had to pay attention while reading if you wanted to understand the complexity of this family.
This is a well researched and detailed account of Charles Taylor and his son Chucky and their exploits in Liberia. Both are doing life in prison thank God.
This is everything I look for in a non-fiction book. I've learned so much about Liberia and what goes on there. It was so well-written I couldn't put it down.
