I purchased this book hoping to get some information about how I can help my daughter with her eating disorder. About a third of the book is exercises to determine IF your child might have an eating disorder (and much of this is listing myths). Then it skips right into comparing different types of treatment. I found nothing in this book about how I could help my daughter after her diagnosis and between doctor/psychologist visits. I felt like I was reading a college textbook on Eating Disorders 101. As a parent of a child afflicted with anorexia, I did not find this book helpful. Perhaps it would be useful for someone who suspects his or her child has an eating disorder and wants more information.
A good insight into our granddaughter's disease and how we might be able to help her during visits with us.
I gave as a gift
Purchase was easy and delivery was within expected timeframe. Appreciate the opportunity to purchase new or like-new books at competitive prices.
After seeing Ms. Natenshon on Oprah to discuss the treatment and prevention of eating disorders, I purchased her book and was so pleased to learn how valuable her approach is! This book is the first book I have seen on this subject that actually helps a parent to understand the importance of being involved with professionals in working to heal eating disorders. The information is clear and guides the reader in developing resources to truly help and not just understand the causes of these eating disorders. Her website is also extremely informative and offers resources to work hand in hand with her book. A must have for anyone trying to overcome the frustrations and helplessness associated with eating disorders and help take action that will make a difference.
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for the parents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on.
I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.
As the father of a 21 year old daughter who has suffered from bulimia for ten years, I found Abigail Natenshon's 'When Your Child has an Eating Disorder' to be the most relevant book I have read on how parents can work with their eating disordered child towards wellness. It's positive, workbook style provides practical knowledge, insight and tools to help parents increase their contribution to their child's recovery. It's thorough coverage of the stages of illness and recovery, along with practical advice and helpful exercises, allowed us to see the recovery process more clearly and in greater perspective. This provided great anxiety relief and an increased sense of control.I wish we had found this book earlier in the journey to our daughter's recovery! It is a must read for any parents, family or friends of eating disordered teens.
