Review

""Jambalaya is a gift, open to all people, a gift of an ancient tradition, a gift of stories and celebrations, a gift of Teish's own history and voice, the voice of a strong, knowledgeable, and wise black woman." -- Starhawk, author of "Truth or Dare""A book of startling remembrances, revelations, directives, and imperatives, filled with the mysticism, wisdom, and common sense of the African religion of the Mother. It should be read with the same open-minded love with which it was written." -- Alice Walker, author of "The Color Purple""Teish reveals a wealth of new visions and ancient wisdom from a cultural heritage unknown to most readers. To a style of writing that is friendly and relaxed, Teish adds the spice of her wonderful sense of humor. This is a book that sharpens the intuitive sense in each of us and encourages us to that inner knowlcdge." -- Merlin Stone, author of "When God Was a Woman"

I bought this book for research, and it more than met my expectations. In fact, I couldn't put this book down until I'd read it cover-to-cover! Ms. Teish weaves a compelling first-person story, balanced with rituals and work.Whether you're a woman looking for spiritual answers in a confusing and conflicted world, an historian surveying cross-cultural religious traditions, or a beginner curious about the spiritual options of Voudou, this book is tremendous and worth looking for. It's a page-turner, no matter what your background and interests.

I'm sad there's not more discourse concerning this book floating around--this is a book you should add to your library. Here is a book where the personal is spiritual as well as political--Teish expertly combines her personal narratives of her journey into a spirituality that is both progressive and deeply rooted with a compendium of practical rituals. The worldviews and rituals here show a beautiful and seamless mixture of diverse African diasporic traditions--Lucumi, Vodoun, and hoodoo--with women's spirituality. This is a must for anyone's book shelf--Luisah Teish is a major voice for women of color within the women's spirituality movement, and (as you'll know if you watched The Goddess Remembered) she did a lot of work to make this movement (which sprang from "second wave" feminism) intersectional. Jambalaya should also be included in any library of African diasporic spirituality--you're sure to find practical rituals for the contemporary American, usable by anyone. I would even recommend it as a book to give to a person exploring these forms of spirituality for the first time.

I just finished reading and I strongly recommend you purchase. It was educational and would be a great resource to add to your existing library. Get connected with your spirituality!

I love this book. I had seen people talking about this book for quite a while now, and I get why people think it is oh so special. I haven't finished reading the book, but I started it last night and can't put it down. The personal stories and charms are just too wonderful to pass up. I feel like this is one of those books where if I had the time, I would finish it in one sitting.

Just purchased and received this book for myself and a sister friend of the craft. Everything that ive read so far is so relatable to my life and my upbringing. Cant wait to gift this !!!

This is probably the best book I purchased in 2018. It’s so full of information and wonder. It makes sense if many things my grandparents and mother did while growing up. It’s well written and thought out. I keep reading it and finding new things to love about this book. I am enjoying this purchase very much and will eventually share it with dear friends. If your on the fence about buying it, buy it. Worth every cent.

Luisah takes you on a journey of remembrance through thought-provoking stories and workings that will enliven even the most jaded soul. Her stories are relatable and may take you back to memories of your own childhood.I highly recommend to anyone who feels disconnected to get this book, for it will reconnect you to who you are meant to be.

This book was a surprise to me. I thought it was mostly a how to narrative however it contains such delightful stories of the author's life it reads like a novel It is one of the best books I have read and I real a lot I recommend it to anyone who needs a delightful read and a break from the ordinary

This book is awesome to refer to for rituals and spells or just to educate yourself about Vodou period. I appreciate her sharing this to the world.
