As can be expected from Ms. Knowles this was thoughtfully scripted & competently edited book that presented a pleasing alternative version of P&P. Some significant changes in the personality & marital status of a few characters (eg. Jane was married, Georgiana & Anne de Bourgh were more lively) allowed for several diverse interactions between the various protagonists to occur. Once Elizabeth disappeared from Hunsford (plus, lost her memory) the storyline began to deviate markedly from convention. Darcy's active participation in, not only, the search for her person but the ensuing aspects of her physical & psychological recovery further developed unorthodox theme. Yet, the story also contained a number of familiar plot points as many of the supporting characters retained their established personae & predictable behaviours (eg. Mr & Mrs Bennet, Lydia, Wickham, Lady Catherine, Mr Collins, Caroline Bingley).Unfortunately, with this novel the author failed to produce the engrossing type tale, replete with manifest conflict & warm emotional connections, that aficionados of her work are accustomed to enjoying. The plot unfolded at a somewhat pedestrian pace & sometimes jumped disconcordantly in time & place. Moreover, the characters were not well-rounded (ie. two dimensional representations). However, it was gratifying that the elopement debacle was thwarted in a timely & discreet manner; also, that Mr Bennet finally accepted his patriarchal mantel.Overall, while this book was a decent effort it did not measure up to the high standard set by other of this author's novels (eg. Rare Ability, Hidden in Plain Sight, Her Very Own Mr Darcy). Not an outstanding publication.
