#2,269 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I loved the first book and eagerly awaited the publication of this installment of the series. At first, I was just disappointed, but as I continued, it just got worse. What happened to Ian? All his best parts are gone. And his brother is utterly unrecognizable. He's now some two-dimensional Identitarian approximation.I had to re-read the passage where Ian is annoyed by a woman and NOTHING points to his attraction/infatuation. So where does Donald come up with that idea? It apparently happens for the plot. OK, I can be a bit forgiving, but he's so over the top about it to the point of melodrama. As that storyline progressed, it seemed wholly tacked on and out of line. Is that some set up for some future romantic subplot? At this point, I don't care. She is so ill-suited for Ian that I can't believe he'd be into her in any way shape or form. Yes, he grumbles about her, but he never gave any real indication that he was into her in any way. I'm not buying the "opposites attract" trope with them and can't understand why it's even hinted at or suggested. As for the brother's coming out. It was completely disgusting! I was so angry that I waited for weeks to write this review and though I've calmed down, I'm still agitated and offended. I can believe the attitude of the aunt. She's old, and her views may have softened in time, and her reactions happen off-page, but Ian's response is entirely unforgivable and utterly homophobic! This story is supposed to take place in the era of Oscar Wilde's trial. It's utterly disgraceful to assign modern-day values to historical characters. It's bad enough that you include real-life people and put fictional words in their mouths with impunity. That's cringe-inducing as it continues throughout the narrative. This book does a massive disservice to all of the men imprisoned, bullied, beaten, ostracised, castigated and disgraced for being same-sex attracted or homosexual or even just accused. The fact that Ian immediately accepts the situation without a comment of concern as to the repercussions of such an admission is utterly reprehensible. Gay men in that era used coded language, wore distinctive items like green carnations and other in-group signifiers because they couldn't speak openly about their sexuality. If brotherly love did indeed overshadow disgust or homophobia at the time, he would embed his reaction in a deep level of concern for the safety or stigma or health or any number of associated issues swirling around the context of being gay in the 1800s.I realize they have a strained relationship. That's outlined quite well, but we get no amount of private conflict. No amount of acknowledgment that Ian could be fired if his brother is outed at any point in time. That level of scandal often affected the whole family. No one even considers the fact that after medical school he could be a target of blackmail or worse. Everyone's reactions read like some politically progressive contemporary lovefest where unconditional acceptance is demanded and assured. By erasing gay history in this manner, you're perpetrating a grave disservice to our community and imposing a heteronormative political agenda on historical fiction where it has no place! As if all of that was bad enough, I figured out who the killer was in the scene she was first introduced! This book is poorly written and nowhere near the standard of the first one.

I read the first book and then waited impatiently for this second Ian Hamilton mystery. The sad thing about this book is that I didn't pace myself so now I've reached the end and have to wait forever for the next book. I am sad. I don't need to spend a lot of time and big words describing the story and explaining why I liked the book. I enjoyed it immensely. I wasn't trying to find little things that might or might not have been or occurred during the time period. I just kept on reading because it was a good story. Like I said, I can't wait to find out more about Ian Hamilton and co. I hope that happens soon.

What a disappointment! Every aspect of this second in what appears to be planned as a series is awful. Many authors are introducing a clever detective who is bumbling in social situations. Many include tough topics such as sexual assault. Many manage to pull off interesting, meaningful stories using that theme. This author failed. The construction is plodding, rambling, disjointed. The dialog is flat, simplistic, and meaningless. The characters lack depth and none seem to connect with another. The potential " romance" consisted of sniping, glaring, put downs, and then the brother announces that they are made for each other. Odd, awkward, icky. But the treatment of homosexuality was TERRIBLE. I am sick of "enlightened" pc modernists laying their heavy handed views onto a historical setting. If the story needs a gay character, do it correctly or not at all. I suggest not at all. As another reviewer mentioned, do not erase history. That is morally repugnant and unfair to both history and modern times. Both brothers were depicted in an interesting manner in the first book. Something went off the rails here. This is a painful, unpleasant, pointless story. Every character comes out a looser. And so does the reader. I waited for this book. I won't wait for more from this author.

This is the second book in the Ian Hamilton Mysteries and it is just as good as the first. The plot surrounds a series of murders that have been brought to the police by a woman doctor. Hamilton is tasked with solving the case and with the help of his Sgt. and a certain medical student name Arthur Conan Doyle! Ian is able to piece together the clues to come to a spectacular ending. The characters are well defined and bring different personalities to the story. There are several background stories that are also created that will most likely be the plot for future books. A great read.

I gave this book there stars because ultimately I like the story. Its the subplots that brought me to the second book. For instance, the mystery illnees of Crawford's wife, and the story of Donald Hamilton. One of the problem I have with this book is the time period. I read historical novels like they're going out of style and it is always obvious the time period. With this book I kept having to go back and make sure eat time period it was. There are some really inconsistencies with what existed in the 1880's and what is in this book. The characters act and say things that would never he done or said then. And I agree with others that Donald's story it completely out of context and disturbing. I wish it weren't in the book at at all because it doesn't fit, but if it's necessary then do it correctly. This book is supposed to be set in 1880!!! I will read the following books because, like I said, I like the subplots but please please take Fiona Stuart out of the next book. She is reprehensible and if she ends up with Ian....I'll probably stop reading the books. All in all, if you like historical fiction, you very well might not like this book. It grossly inaccurate but it you just an entertaining story without caring much for style or character development this one works. But I also guessed the killer in the very beginning when that character entered the story.
