I have carved almost every figure from this book as a Christmas present for my mother. I found the instructions concise and easy to follow, particularly when paired with the excellent photo illustrations. The basic figure shapes are defined in detail and easily applied to the remaining figures with little modification. In fact minor alterations have been used to create additional figures such as the little drummer boy. I have an extensive carving library and rank this book as one of my absolute favorites. I strongly reccomend this book for all level of carvers.

When I ordered the copy I just received at Amazon.com the price was less than $3.00 and the condition rated as good. My thought was that for less than $3.00 I couldn't be that good, but what the heck. What a surprise. The copy I received was brand new. I don't think it had ever been opened. Shawn is an excellent woodcarver and his instructions for carving Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus are very good and build the foundation for carving the rest of the figures in the book. There enough photos of the finished pieces to fill in the blanks for what is not covered in the detail instructions . However, this book would be more for an intermediate to advanced carver and not so much for a beginner because there are no instructions for carving the animals.
Another book that needs to be in your Christmas carving library. Shawn's work is outstanding and the photos show enough detail to make the process simple to follow. Get it - you wont be disappointed.
I am a Woodhaven and this was good as I made a set for 2 grandsons.
This book is well written and I can hardly wait to get started on my set.... but first I must finish the spring chores. :-( The details are plain enough to be easy but detailed enough to be delightful. I appreciate the instructions being so complete espectially the painting.
I started this project I got baby Jesus done and I am working on Joseph and Mary now , you need a bunch of basswood so get looking for it now.
Excellent images and details but templates should have been to real scale. Not really for the beginner but very good book. I'll try the figures after I get a little more comfortable with my technique.
I got this book for my woodcarver husband, and says it's excellent. Large, easy to follow templates. He would recommend this book to carvers of all abilities.
